After a great weekend, beautiful blue skys and crisp cool mornings, it is time to get back to the workout.

Today is cardio day.  I use a heart rate monitor in conjunction with the elliptical machine to keep my heart rate at a constant rate.  My target is 140 beats per minute.  The machine will add and subtract the tension to keep the rate constant.

I strap on my MP3 player to my arm, load up some Christian music and start moving.  I usually do between 35 and 40 minutes of the high intensity workout.  The 5 minute cool down will get my rate back to 112 or so.  It is important NOT to jump off a cardio routine at a high heart rate without cooling down or walking it off gradually.

I measure my workout on how well I maintained the pace, how wet my clothes are (argh!) and how much I can eat afterwards.  This is by far my favorite type of cardio.

I think I will take a day off before going back to the weight room.

Please feel free to share your favorite (and not so favorite) workouts with results.  We can all learn from each other.

To your health and fitness, Keith

p.s. If you want to know where my plan originates, I am following the book Tom Venuto wrote.  I bought it last year and continue to learn more everyday as I progress.
